Self drive car rental guide.

We aim to be a car rental company that does NOT rip off our customers through small prints and additional unforeseen rental charges. Our rental pricing is based on un-limited mileage, comprehensive insurance (unless otherwise advised) and no extra costs for additional drivers. We understand that most travel related complaints tend to be about car rental issues especially car rental conditions, additional costs on vehicle collection or drop off due to unforeseen, unadvised in advance insurance charges, not having car rental contracts available in advance and a whole raft of other small print charges not advised upfront by car rental companies.  Our headline car hire rate is our total rental rate, we do not charge additional fees for fuel for example. We always aim to give uncompromised representations of our car hire prices and car rental service offerings. We have maintained the days of straightforward car rental pricing and unambiguous car rental contracts.

We are a rental company that can be trusted to offer reasonable car rental rates and one that does its level best to advise transparent car rental pricing through the booking process and in the rental contract. Our website country pages offer applicable rental information, terms and conditions as well as camping equipment list where applicable and driver charges that include the driver fees, their accommodation and food. For cross border rentals, we will clearly indicate the cross border insurance fees if not inclusive of the rental charges, Interpol fees where applicable as well as one way rental fees, where the vehicle is rented from one location and left at another location. We want to be 100% price compliant and transparent so that renters can know in advance what their car rental bills are. We will very rarely retain your credit card details and will advise rentals where a security deposit is required as this varies from country to country.

Our fuel policy is usually take full, return full but clients can choose to sign up to pick up near empty and return near empty if they prefer.

Car rental guidelines.

  1. Reserve your rental car as far ahead as possible to qualify for any early booking offers/discounts. Self drive vehicle rentals for some rental locations especially in Southern Africa e.g South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique, Tanzania do get fully booked up during the leak travel periods of July/August/December and January. It is not uncommon for us not to have any rental vehicles for these months, a few months in advance. So please book and confirm your rental car early enough to avoid disappointments with your holiday planning.
  2. Check the type of insurance being offered and daily mileage limitations if any.
  3. Advise the number of drivers in advance and number of people in the travel party so that we reserve the right vehicle for you, as well the right quantities of camping equipment for clients on camping self drive safaris.
  4. Please let us know in advance of any extra requirements, including child seats, extra fuel cans, extra tyres, gps, maps, or any other route planning advice.
  5. Ask us for assistance with local driving etiquette in case you are not conversant with the same, driving licence restrictions etc. for example one cannot drive in Ethiopia without an Ethiopian driver’s licence. Some countries like Ghana require for one to have an international drivers’ licence to be able to legally drive. Driving age limits can also vary from one country to the next, so please check carefully before you get behind the wheels.
  6. Make sure you do not change money at the airport as airport forex bureaus tend to offer uncompetitive currency exchange rates.
  7. Always keep our contact details handy, you never know when you might need them. If a flight a delayed, endeavour to email us, sms or watsapp at the earliest so that we can notify the vehicle delivery driver asap and consequently reschedule the vehicle delivery times.

At the airport or vehicle hand over location.

  1. Make sure you read carefully and sign the rental agreement, not forgetting to give us a copy of your passport and drivers’ licence in case you did not email these to us in advance.
  2. Check the fuel type. Refuelling with the wrong fuel will totally mess up both the airflow meter of the rental vehicle and cost you valuable time with your trip as we try to sort out the cockup.
  3. Inspect the car thoroughly for bodywork damages, windscreens and tyres. If you can take photos of the vehicle.
  4. Ask to be shown the tyre changing kit and other items that must be in the vehicle as per the country’s driving rules, as they could be missing through loss by the previous renter or left in a repair garage. We always try to check for these items before handing the rental vehicle to you, but we do miss  some minor details sometimes. It doesn’t hurt to ascertain that everything is in place before you drive off. Not having a wheel spanner can be the difference between losing 4 hours of your holiday when you get a tyre puncture or simply changing it and proceed within 10 minutes.
  5. Do a test drive of the vehicle to ascertain that everything is working perfectly fine and that you are comfortable with the rental vehicle. Report any noises or mechanical concerns immediately and remember to take a note of the name of the person you speak with.

If you have an accident

  1. Call the local police if another vehicle is involved – and immediately notify us.
  2. Do not abandon the rental vehicle at the accident scene. Wait by the vehicle if it is safe to do so until our rescue vehicle arrives.

When you return the car

  1. Check and ascertain that the vehicle is in good order and all the equipment and tools are in place.
  2. DO NOT simply abandon the vehicle at the airport and take off even if you are late for your flight. The rental vehicle remains your responsibility until properly handed over back to one of our official representatives.
  3. Keep the receipts of any repairs that you may have spent on during the rental.
  4. If you can take a new set of photographs at vehicle handover to prove that the rental vehicle has been returned without new scratches on the body work or cracks in the windscreens.
