Public transportation in Africa is not usually the most comfortable and definitely not the safest. Public buses tend to overspeed and not usually in good shape. There is also a very high probability that they will not always be running on time. This would create anxiety especially if you have a scheduled holiday activity like gorilla trekking in Uganda or Rwanda which takes place at a set time and where cancellation with a refund is not possible which could lead to loss of US$1500 that you would have paid for a Rwanda gorilla permit or US$600 for a Uganda gorilla permit. It would thus be recommended that one seriously considers a self drive rental vehicle or with driver rental vehicle from us. Driving a self drive hire car in a foreign country can be very problematic especially to the first time visitor. Driving in Kampala for example during peak hours 07am-11am, 16:00hrs-20:00hrs is definitely not for the faint hearted. You would need to be prepared to break some traffic rules and driving etiquette that you are used to. You would need to be prepared to squeeze the vehicle in fairly narrow spaces. Driving in Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, Accra, Addis Ababa etc can also be fairly challenging.
Self driving in most national parks also has its own rules and guidelines. Infringement of this parks' driving guidelines can come with very high fines. Driving off the stipulated tracks can attract fines of over $1000 and are aggressively enforced by most park authorities. Every self drive hire client needs to be aware of local traffic laws and of the road hazards including stray animals into the roads, differences in road signs and must dos and donts while on the roads. Driving in Africa can most certainly be different from what one may be used to in Europe ,Asia or North America. Some of the road conditions can be challenging and at best extremely dangerous. However plenty a visitor have done just fine with a little pre-trip planning, guidance from our rental customer service teams who are always available to address any concerns that you might have.
